The Alabama Board of Medical Examiners and the Medical Licensure Commission have adopted emergency administrative rules and procedures allowing for the emergency licensing of qualified medical personnel. These measures will allow physicians and physician assistants who possess full and unrestricted medical licenses from appropriate medical licensing agencies to apply for and receive temporary emergency licenses to practice in Alabama for the duration of the declared COVID-19 health emergency. Physicians with retirement waivers will be able to obtain emergency reinstatement of their licenses without completing the 25 credits of continuing medical education that would normally be required.
There will be no fees for the temporary emergency licenses and reinstatements. All temporary emergency licenses will be confined to no longer than the length of the statewide health emergency. Recipients of temporary emergency licenses will also receive restricted Alabama Controlled Substances Certificates for the sole purpose of treating patients suffering from and affected by the 2019 Novel Coronavirus.
William Perkins, the Board's Associate Executive Director, stated: "The Board of Medical Examiners is taking these measures to ensure that the people of Alabama have access to all available resources as we respond to this epidemic. As the situation develops, the agency is committed to the overall health and safety of the people of Alabama.”
