Montgomery, AL (March 16, 2020)— Coronavirus has now been confirmed in Montgomery. The clients we are serving are some of the most vulnerable throughout our community and they are the most vulnerable if they catch the virus. The virus, also known as COVID-19, puts older people at a higher risk of death. Those with existing health issues are also most vulnerable. We are using hand sanitizer stations for Meals On Wheels volunteers and staff. MACOA has always met the standards of the Alabama Department of Health and Alabama Department of Senior Services. We have always prioritized keeping things free from germs long before COVID-19. We are now putting extra vigor into cleaning the Meals On Wheels van, food bags, and other supplies that we use daily.
“We are all doing the things we can do to limit the impact of this virus on those we serve” said Donna Marietta, the Executive Director of MACOA. “We are sending out newsletters and emails to volunteers and clients encouraging them to practice proper hygiene standards.” A copy of the guidance sent to volunteers and clients is attached to this press release.
MACOA is telling all staff and volunteers who feel sick to stay home, but encouraging healthy volunteers to continue serving our senior neighbors.
Every weekday, volunteers travel to the 404 elderly and homebound residents in the Montgomery community bringing hot meals and companionship. The Leadership Team of MACOA is working to make sure that the nutritious food is the only thing the volunteers and staff bring when they visit the clients. We do not want to risk infecting the vulnerable populations with Coronavirus. Together our community will support and serve homebound seniors.
