For District Manager of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama Troy Maxwell, the chance to serve others is the most rewarding aspect of his job, and the Chamber’s similar commitment to service make him and his team proud to be active members.
How long have you worked for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama? 16 years
How many employees does BCBS of Alabama have in the River Region? There are 22 associates in the River Region.
Are you from Montgomery? No. I was born in Zanesville, Ohio, and moved to Montgomery when I was 10 years old. My father was in the glass business and worked for Brockway Glass on Lower Wetumpka Road. I attended Head Elementary, Capital Heights Jr. High, Robert E. Lee High School and Huntingdon College, where I obtained my bachelor’s degree in accounting.
What are the duties and responsibilities of your position? I’m responsible for leading the sales and service teams in the region while ensuring that our customers’ expectations and needs are met daily.
What is your favorite part of your job? Serving others. Whether it’s in the community, a customer of ours or an associate with BCBSAL, seeing challenges and issues through to an amicable resolution is what brings great joy to me in my role. Fostering and developing relationships while mentoring those who serve you brings a sense of community, whether it’s a customer or an associate, and this drives me every day to be the best I can be for those that depend on me. I learned a long time ago that you are only as good as those that you surround yourself with, so I make a conscious effort daily to invest in others.
How much have health care and health insurance changed in the last decade and how is BCBS of Alabama adapting? Over the last decade, the healthcare industry has seen an immense amount of change. We will continue to respond by putting the needs of our customers first and remaining committed to providing them access to the quality healthcare they need.
What is your impression of Montgomery’s current business climate? Montgomery is a thriving city that has a healthy business climate and the support of many talented business professionals from a variety of industries. This all leads to communities that prosper and an excellent quality of life for current and future Montgomery-area residents.
Why do you and BCBS of Alabama choose to be so supportive of the Chamber and its work? Blue Cross is focused on giving back to the community, so we are proud to support The Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce. They do an exceptional job at providing programs and opportunities that are focused on positive economic growth, workforce expansion and community wellbeing.
What are your interests outside of work? I have a great passion for my family, but my selfish interest is golf. Most of my free time now is dedicated to my family. I have two boys, ages 15 and 19, who are very athletic and adventurous. I find myself dedicating my free time and resources to their interests while supporting them in their endeavors. Whether it’s on Lake Martin wake surfing and wakeboarding, on a ball field somewhere cheering and supporting, or outside riding four wheelers and sitting in a shooting house, that’s where you will find me when I’m not working.
What’s an accomplishment you are proud of? I’m proud of the fact that I played baseball my entire childhood in Montgomery, all the way through high school. I picked up a golf club late in life, my senior year of high school to be exact. I went on to play collegiately and was senior captain and played a small part of two National Championship golf teams at Huntingdon College. Most importantly, I achieved a bachelor’s degree in accounting at the same time. This set me up for life, and I married my high school sweetheart after graduating college. We have been married 25 years raising two awesome young men that love our Lord and pursue His will daily in their lives. It doesn’t get much better than that. I’m so blessed and grateful to all those who played a role in this success.
