Montgomery, Ala. – May 24, 2018Today the Montgomery Internet Exchange (MGMix), Alabama’s only open internet exchange, announced the addition of five new members, including Alabama State University. The increased momentum for MGMix continues to propel Montgomery’s Smart City Movement forward as part of its efforts to encourage transparency, innovation and application development while attracting major tech companies to the city.

In an effort to increase educational opportunities in the state’s capital, MGMix has joined forces with Alabama State University, which will immediately benefit from the increased 100Gig internet speed and security.

“Joining Montgomery’s internet exchange will increase the capacity of work at the university in a way not before imagined,” said ASU President Dr. Quinton T. Ross, Jr., who spearheaded the campaign to join MGMix. “This will allow us to collaborate with research universities and institutions across the globe in ‘nano seconds.’”

Led by a visionary collaboration among Montgomery County, The City of Montgomery, research universities, Maxwell Gunter Air Force Base and the new Cyber College of the Air Force, MGMix has 100 Gbps capacity – one of only four of its kind in the Southeast.

“We cannot overstate MGMix’s role in expanding industry in the region and across the state by putting Montgomery on the map – literally – of the internet’s backbone, while providing the infrastructure needed to attract new businesses, industries and opportunities that cultivate growth in our burgeoning tech sector,” said Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange. “Whether you’re streaming entertainment, collaborating with other businesses or uploading large amounts of information, you’re getting the best speeds and most secure network in the state thanks to the MGMix.”

Nearing its second anniversary, MGMix currently has 20 connected members and continues to grow.
