Nick Tabor joins us at The NewSouth Bookstore to discuss his new book, Africatown: America’s Last Slave Ship and the Community It Created. The story focuses on the community founded by enslaved people carried to the Gulf Coast by the Clotilda, the remains of which were recently discovered. That community was rooted in slavery, but its people refused to let that be their only identity. In Africatown Yoruba was spoken, and its residents appointed their own leaders. Today, those living there battle the effects of pollution from surrounding industry and land developers. Tabor tells an evocative story about an inspirational history tied to this place. The event is on Thursday, March 30 at 5:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.
