The Alabama Dance Theatre opens its studio doors to young people with two exciting opportunities, and welcomes award-winning guest choreographer Anna Fredeen to town.
Young people are invited to try dance classes for free Saturday, September 3rd at Community Day “A Chance to Dance” classes, and audition for roles in the upcoming production of Dracula. Auditions for children in 2nd grade and up will be at 10am on Saturday, September 10th.
Both events will take place at the Alabama Dance Theatre’s studios at the City of Montgomery Cultural Arts Center at 1018 Madison Avenue.
ADT is excited to welcome Lance Washington, Anna Fredeen, and Liza Simpler as guest teachers for the final Community Day of 2022. They will teach hip hop, contemporary/modern, and improvisational movement. Community Day classes are designed for ages 8 - 21, divided into three groups that rotate from teacher to teacher. No dance experience is required! Classes will begin at 10am, and advance registration is strongly suggested as class size is limited.
Each participant will receive a free t shirt and a snack. Sponsors of 2022 Community Days are Regions Bank, PNC, Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. This program has been made possible by funding from the City of Montgomery Department of Cultural Affairs.
Guest teacher Anna Fredeen is in town serving as Choreographer in Residence, setting a new piece on the ADT Company’s Junior members. She is in Montgomery through the Regional Dance America’s National Institute of Choreography. As winner of the Choreography Connection award in 2021, she was invited to select an RDA member company on which to set a new work, and selected the Alabama Dance Theatre.
“Anna is a talented young choreographer, and she generously agreed to be part of this Community Day while she is in town to work with our Company,” said Artistic Director Kate Seale Smith. “We are looking forward to seeing the work she creates. It’s a great opportunity for our dancers when they can work with new teachers and choreographers. We hope to have lots of young people come to the studios and try dance, maybe for the very first time, at this Saturday’s Community Day.”
Registration for Community Day is free, and open to ages 8 to 21. No special clothing or equipment required. There is a $35 registration fee for Dracula auditions.
