MONTGOMERY, AL – Construction is underway at a site along Calmar Drive that will feature a brand-new community center, the Calmar Community Center.
“Calmar Community Center will serve as a cornerstone of its community,” said City of Montgomery Mayor Steven L. Reed. “Part of the Montgomery Forward initiative, the center will be a place where residents can come together, share meals, and strengthen community bonds.”
The 5,000-square-foot facility will include meeting rooms and classrooms for high-quality pre-K programming, workforce development, and continuing education opportunities.
The facility will also incorporate activities for senior citizens, high school students, and others.
With an investment of 2.5 million dollars, the Calmar Community Center is expected to open its doors in the spring of 2025. Funding for the center comes from American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, as well as the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Block Grant program.
“These community centers represent more than just bricks and mortar; they are the beating heart of our neighborhoods,” Reed exclaimed. “With these developments, we are not just building buildings; we are building a stronger, more connected Montgomery.”
Over the next eight to nine months, the city expects to complete or renovate four additional community centers, each designed to serve as vibrant hubs in its respective districts.
