MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Sept. 5, 2024) — Montgomery County’s new Flatwood Community Center building officially opened Thursday. The grand reopening celebrates the completion of the center’s reconstruction, which followed the destruction of the previous facility by a tornado on Nov. 20, 2022.
The state-of-the-art facility serves as a vital hub for local activities and community gatherings, benefiting numerous residents across Montgomery County each year.
The center features modern amenities, including a computer lab, a fully equipped kitchen, and a multipurpose meeting space. Enhanced accessibility ensures the facility is welcoming and functional for all members of the community.
“Rebuilding the Flatwood Community Center was a promise we were determined to keep,” said Montgomery County Commission Chairman Doug Singleton. “This new facility not only represents our commitment to recovering from the storm, but also our dedication to enhancing community life. We are proud to provide a space where residents can come together, connect, and thrive.”
“We are incredibly proud to open the doors of the Flatwood Community Center once again,” said Montgomery County Commission Vice Chairman Isaiah Sankey. “The new center stands as a symbol of the Flatwood community’s strength and unity. We look forward to seeing it serve as a vibrant space for gathering, learning, and celebrating for many years to come.”
The newly renovated Flatwood Community Center will be a cornerstone for community development, promoting health, education, and social connections.
The center will host a variety of community events and programs, including senior activities, a youth summer camp, health and wellness classes, and neighborhood gatherings. Future enhancements include an updated walking trail and a new playground. Additionally, the center will offer space for local organizations to hold meetings and events, supporting community-driven initiatives.
